Supervising and awarding SLP hours via Simucase
Best practices and clinical clock hours for speech-language pathology

Determining Standards and Assigning Cases
To help faculty map simulations to core competencies, Simucase includes ASHA standards for SLP simulations in the Prebrief Material and Curriculum Guide as well as within Debrief Mode. In Debrief Mode, select Debrief Questions and ASHA standards. From the simulation library, select Download Prebrief Material and Curriculum Guide to view the standards attached to each simulation.
Download the SLP Clinical Clock Hour Guidelines and review types, areas of clinical practice, and total time for Simucase speech-language pathology simulations. Each simulation has a recommended completion time and Simucase provides recommendations on how to divide time across topics.
When you have selected the simulations for your curriculum, assign simulations by finding the simulation you want your group of students to complete and select Assign. Note that only faculty members can assign simulations. Once you create an assignment, you can copy the assignment from one group to another within the dashboard.
Review how to create groups and assign content in the dashboard.
Monitor and track students' performance in the dashboard.
Completing Simulations and Scoring
While choosing simulations to assign, understand that each simulation has a recommended completion time. Students who are new to Simucase may take twice as long as the recommended time to complete a simulation. If a student takes longer than the recommended time, Simucase does not recommend awarding additional time. When assigning a simulation, you should also remind students to submit all their attempts for the simulation. Their cumulative attempts should meet or exceed the recommended time.
The recommended completion time is based on listening to all the reflective answers, reading all the reports, and watching all the videos in the simulation. It is imperative that students complete these elements to earn hours. If a student completes a simulation in a very short amount of time, you may award less time; however, please remind the student that optimal knowledge is achieved through completion of all simulation elements.
As part of successful completion of a simulation, an overall competency score of 90% is best practice. It is the competency score we recommend to ensure your students master the decisions in the simulation by demonstrating clinical and critical thinking skills. The competency score is an average of all the sections of a simulation (e.g., Case History, Collaborators, Hypothesis, Assessments, Diagnosis, Recommendations). Assignments have a 90% score threshold as a default setting. You can edit an assignment to adjust the score threshold and completion time requirement if needed.
Supervising Simulations
Supervision must include a prebrief, feedback, and a debrief. During the prebrief, review the Simucase platform with students to ensure they understand the technology. Provide feedback by using the dashboard to monitor student progress and identify areas of strengths and weakness. During the debrief, review what was learned during the clinical simulation(s) and highlight how this information might be applied to real clients in the future.
Enhancing Learning
Along with SLP simulations and observational videos, your students can supplement their Simucase experiences with complimentary educational access to SpeechPathology.com. You can assign students to complete any of the CEU courses; they should pass the quiz at the end of the course with 80% accuracy. Download the PDF and distribute it to your students so they can sign up.
