Inaugural SIMposium offers expert insights into simulation-based education

Posted October 16, 2023

Simucase hosted its inaugural SIMposium virtual networking event on Sept. 29, 2023.

Simucase SIMposium: Unleashing Innovation, Inspiring Collaboration, offered faculty the opportunity to network and expand their knowledge of how simulation-based education can enhance their curricula and clinical training.

Participants got a peek at new Simucase content and participated in the breakout session of their choice. Breakout sessions were led by experts in audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, and speech-language pathology.

More than 150 faculty and representatives from universities across the country participated in the free event.

“We were thrilled to welcome faculty from across the country and demonstrate how simulations can support their curriculum,” said Katie Ondo, MA, CCC-SLP, CHSE, managing director of Simucase. “Hearing first hand from faculty about how they are utilizing the content within their curriculum was very powerful and provided opportunities for great discussion within the Q&A session.”

Featured breakout sessions and expert guest speakers included:

  • Bringing Sims to Life: Infusing Professional Issues in Simulation with Lauren Mann, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, University of Kansas Medical Center

  • An Exploration of a Single Program’s Use of Simucase to Enhance Clinical Training with Quinn Tyminski, OTD, OTR/L, BCMH, Washington University in Saint Louis

  • Alternative Learning Methods to Supplement Clinical Education Experiences: Simucase to the Rescue! with Ashley M. Reedy, PT, DPT, BSPTS, Lackawanna College

“As a new user of Simucase, I really appreciated getting tips from those who have used Simucase,” said Lisa Quinn-Lee, Ph.D., MSSW, LICSW, professor of social work at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

“I liked the format of the SIMposium—meeting in a large group with all disciplines—and then getting to meet in small groups with our profession. It was helpful to have the social work professor go through exactly how she implemented Simucase into her class and what worked well and what didn’t. I also really felt heard by the people who work at Simucase—they all truly want to hear our feedback and ideas and are already implementing some of them.”

The next Simucase SIMposium will be held September 20, 2024.
